Trip Overview

When: February 2015 (Winter - low season, fewer crowds)
Duration: 8 days
Travelers: Two best friends (girlfriends' trip)
Budget: ~2,500 RMB (~$400 USD) per person
Transportation: Group tour with flights, buses, and domestic transfers

Essential Foreigner Info

Getting There: Most travelers fly into Kunming (昆明), the capital of Yunnan Province. We flew from Qinhuangdao (秦皇岛) to Beijing, then to Kunming. Budget airlines like China Eastern offer domestic flights at reasonable prices.

Money Matters: In 2015, cash was still king in Yunnan, especially in smaller towns. Bring some RMB, though mobile payment was starting to gain traction in larger cities like Kunming and Dali.

Language: English is limited outside major tourist areas. Learn a few key phrases: "Xiexie" (谢谢 - thank you), "Zaijian" (再见 - goodbye). In ethnic minority areas like Dali and Lijiang, Mandarin is the go-to language.

Altitude Warning: Lijiang and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山) sit at high altitude (2,400m+). Altitude sickness is real - our entire group got mild colds, and oxygen bottles (80 RMB each) became our best friends. Don't skip the oxygen!

Day 1: Departure - Kunming, Here We Come

The countdown finally ended. After years of "no time, no money" excuses, my best friend and I finally made it happen - our first big trip together, and we chose Yunnan (云南), the mystical land south of the clouds.

We started our journey from Qinhuangdao (秦皇岛) to Beijing (北京), then caught a flight to Kunming (昆明). Pro tip: Choosing seats near the wing is actually safer (and honestly, kind of fun for first-time flyers). We landed at Kunming Airport at 7:52 PM, where a floral welcome awaited - each tourist received a carnation. Such a sweet touch!

Our group tour accommodation was "准五星" (quasi-five-star) - not luxurious, but decent. Pro tip: These vary by region based on local economic conditions. The first night had no dinner included, so we survived on instant noodles and bought some hawthorn juice to drink before bed. An adventure indeed!

Day 2: Kunming to Dali - The Long Drive

Early morning departure from Kunming to Dali (大理). Warning: It's 400 km to Dali, then another 200 km to Lijiang (丽江). In Yunnan, everything is far - that 200 km "short distance" everyone mentions? It's not short by any means!

First stop: Dali Ancient Town (大理古城). The guide emphasized the significance of the two characters "大理" - written by famous scholar Guo Moruo (郭沫若). The other thing Dali is famous for? The Dali Kingdom and the legendary Duan family. History buff? You'll love it.

We wandered Foreigner Street (洋人街), admired the unique architecture, visited the museum, and zipped around the ancient alleys on an electric cart. Note: The town was under renovation during our visit, so some areas were a bit chaotic.

Dali (大理古城): Entry - typically free for the old town, but some attractions charge. Wear layers - spring/fall weather is perfect here.

By evening, we reached Erhai Lake (洱海). Surprise - there were seagulls! We took a small boat to watch the cormorant fishing show. Reality check: The show lasts only about 5 minutes, and the birds catch maybe 3-4 fish before heading back. Pro tip: Don't miss the free fish soup on shore - it's warm and surprisingly tasty!

Then it was on to Lijiang (丽江), another 200 km. Local guide A Xiong (阿雄) greeted us and warned we'd need to wake up early tomorrow for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Dinner: Yunnan Cross-bridge Rice Noodles (云南过桥米线). Completely different from what we'd had back home! The rice noodles, soup, and toppings are served separately - you add them quickly to the hot soup. Light and delicious.

Day 3: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - Touching the Clouds

Up at 6:09 AM - yes, that early! - heading to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山)景区. Reality check: Our hotel's AC broke, and everyone caught colds. Not ideal when you're about to ascend 4,500+ meters! We popped cold medicine and hoped for the best.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山): The cable car (大索道) takes you up - first time on a cable car? It's a bit nerve-wracking but totally safe. Pro tip: Buy oxygen bottles (80 RMB) at the start. We used ours and were glad we did.

Coming down was worse - my ears felt blocked and I couldn't hear people clearly for half an hour. Altitude sickness, apparently. It passed after resting at the base.

Next stop: Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷). Absolute stunner - turquoise waters with snow-capped mountains as backdrop. We could have spent hours here.

Catch: We spent so long taking photos that we only caught the last 15 minutes of the "Impression Lijiang" (印象丽江) show. What we saw was incredible - massive outdoor venue with real雪山 as the backdrop, hundreds of performers and horses. Truly spectacular!

Also visited Jade Water Village (玉水寨) and Black Dragon Pond Park (黑龙潭公园) - the latter is basically every Chinese city's "people's park" - free and optional.

Evening: Songcheng (宋城) and "Lijiang Eternal Love" (丽江千古情) show. This was optional (280 RMB/person) but absolutely worth it. The production quality is incredible - huge sets, real horses, stunning effects. We also explored Lijiang Old Town (丽江古城) that night - famous but commercialized. Still magical for a first visit!

We stayed until 11 PM exploring, even climbed to the viewing platform for a nighttime panorama. Warning: The old town is HUGE. Don't wander alone too long - we got a bit lost!

Day 4: Back to Dali - Tea and Silver

Return trip to Dali territory. Visited Bai Family House (白子人家) for the famous "Three Teas" (三道茶) ceremony. Reality check: This is also a silver shop, and the entire group was sleepy from our late night exploration. Wake up call via tea!

Note: Whenever you get a small placard/牌牌, it means shopping stop! Local joke among tour groups.

Long drive back to Kunming area (6-7 hours). We napped multiple times. Passed through Yi minority areas and learned about various ethnic groups from our guide. It was Lichun (立春 - Start of Spring) that day!

Overnight at Han Tang Lotus Hotel (汉唐莲花酒店) - actual five-star. Years later, colleagues still stayed there when they visited. Seems to be a popular choice!

Day 5: Stone Forest - Imagine the Shapes

Morning: Shopping stops. We didn't buy anything, but it was educational to see jade, silver, and local crafts. Guides cleverly weave local culture into shopping destination introductions.

Afternoon: Shilin Stone Forest (石林景区). The famous "big stones, little stones, three parts viewing, seven parts imagination" - so true! We took the sightseeing bus and wandered through what looked like bare rocks initially. But finding the Ashima rock (阿诗玛) made it all worthwhile.

Stone Forest (石林): This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site showcasing various karst landforms. Truly remarkable geological wonder.

Overnight: Duplex room with outdoor garden and rooftop hot spring. Surprising luxury: We had! Note to wake up super early for the flight to Xishuangbanna tomorrow.

Day 6: Xishuangbanna - Tropical Paradise

Early flight from Kunming to Xishuangbanna (西双版纳) - only 40 minutes, but we circled for 20 minutes and saw the sunrise from above! Amazing.

First stop: Daluo Border Town (打洛), the first town on the China-Myanmar border. Visited Dai Village (傣族村寨) and had the best group meal of the trip - generous portions, authentic Dai food, the hostess kept adding dishes and chicken soup! Then visited Tea Horse Road (茶马古道) - actually a tea shop where you're "invited" to stay and learn about tea (no leaving early allowed!).

Day 7: Wild Elephants and More

Xishuangbanna morning: The air and humidity are so comfortable! Finally the pickled vegetables (榨菜) we brought came in handy.

After breakfast, visited a Dai village where every household has plum trees in bloom. We were taken to a Dai stilt house for a "cultural experience" - I opted to enjoy the fresh air outside while others got the sales pitch.

Afternoon: Wild Elephant Valley (野象谷). We were lucky - only about 50,000 of 4+ million annual visitors see wild elephants! We did. Such a rare treat!

Evening: Wild Elephant show and butterfly garden. The whole area is incredibly lush and green.

Day 8: Return Journey - Until Next Time

Final day in Xishuangbanna, then back to Kunming for return flight home. Our 8-day Yunnan adventure had come to an end.

Would I go back? In a heartbeat. Yunnan offers something for everyone - snow mountains, ancient towns, tropical jungles, minority cultures. It's a province that rewards multiple visits.

Final Tips:
- Book a group tour if short on time - Yunnan is vast and transport between sites is lengthy
- Bring cold medicine and oxygen if visiting high-altitude areas
- Wear layers - weather changes dramatically between altitude zones
- Try the local cuisine - cross-bridge rice noodles, Dai food, Yunnan coffee
- Don't skip Xishuangbanna if you have time - it's a completely different side of Yunnan
