Getting There

Lotus Pond Park (莲花池公园) is located in northern Kunming, northwest of Yuantong Mountain. The park is easily accessible by city bus or by taxi/Didi (China's ride-hailing app). Several bus routes stop nearby, making it convenient to reach from downtown Kunming. The park has multiple entrances that blend seamlessly with surrounding streets - locals really have hit the jackpot here.

Day 1: Lotus Pond Park Exploration

We hadn't planned to visit Lotus Pond Park this time. As we passed by, the lush green views caught our eye - bougainvillea blooming bright red, willow branches swaying green and misty... It drew us in unconsciously. We decided to take a walk through the park, and honestly, there were quite a few new discoveries.

In the peak summer season, Lotus Pond Park is filled with lush greenery. The fitness trail circling the pond is shaded by thick trees, and the willow trees by the lake are thick with leaves, their green so vibrant it seems ready to drip. Blooming bougainvillea cascades like waterfalls, bright and stunning - the scenery of red flowers and green leaves is full of vitality.

There aren't too many visitors in the park. Families walk together, friends meet up - some focus on walking, others admire the flowers. Everyone strolls comfortably under the shady trees. We really love this atmosphere: fewer people, beautiful scenery, allowing you to slow down your pace.

We walked along the lakeside path, slowly admiring flowers and breathing deeply - a relaxing itinerary that's truly refreshing.

Foreigner tip: The park is free to enter and open year-round. Morning and evening are the best times to visit, especially for photography and avoiding midday heat.

What's New: History Comes Alive

It's been a while since we last visited the park, and we discovered quite a few new additions along the lake trail. Simple and practical hand-washing basins stand by the roadside, matching the surrounding environment perfectly - while providing convenience, they've also become a special feature of the park.

We noticed there are many bronze statues of historical figures along both sides of the path, with one appearing every short distance. We hadn't paid much attention before - maybe they're new additions.

Taking a closer look, these bronze sculptures feature famous figures related to Yunnan history, both ancient and modern. There are Saidianchi Zhansiding (赛典赤·瞻思丁) and Sun Xiuweng (孙髯翁) from ancient times, Lin Zexu (林则徐) and Qian Feng (钱沣) from the late Qing period, and modern figures like Wen Yiduo (闻一多), Nie Er (聂耳), Zhu De (朱德), and Li Guangtian (李广田).

Themed display boards titled "The Spirit of Southwest Associated University" and "Stories of Southwest Associated University" transport visitors back to the Southwest Associated University era, bringing back that history when masters gathered in Kunming...

The statue creations and themed display boards selected typical characters, fully showcasing their temperament and characteristics, along with relevant text introductions. This allows us to learn history while strolling through the park - truly getting the best of both worlds.

These historical figures who left a lasting impact are worthy of our remembrance and commemoration.

Pro hack: The historical statues and display boards are concentrated along the lake trail - plan about 30-45 minutes to view all of them and read the introductions.

Final Thoughts

Lotus Pond Park (莲花池公园), tucked away in bustling Kunming, is small yet exquisite and tranquil - a great place for flower viewing and leisure. The park has added many new features: learning history and commemorating predecessors, it's also a nice place to visit.
