Getting There
Flying into Kunming (昆明), China's "Spring City" known for its pleasant year-round climate, we rented a car and drove via highway directly to the Ancient Dian Kingdom Resort (古滇名城度假区). The resort sits about 30km south of Kunming city center, making it easily accessible for a first-time visitor to Yunnan province.
Day 1: Checking Into Paradise
We arrived at Ancient Dian Kingdom Resort (古滇名城度假区) after landing at Kunming Airport, taking the highway all the way. Checking into the Gujian Resort Hotel (古滇度假酒店), we were impressed by the facilities—spacious two-bedroom suites with living rooms and balconies overlooking the resort. The green-themed decor created a warm, home-away-from-home atmosphere.
The hotel complex includes 13 food stalls serving cuisines from across China, plus a 400-seat dining hall serving free breakfast for hotel guests. Evening strolls revealed the surrounding area is packed with amenities—perfect for families or groups.
Dinner at Yixinyuan Restaurant (怡心园餐厅): This local favorite serves authentic Yunnan cuisine (滇菜), known for its bold flavors and unique ingredients. We tried the famous flower banquet (鲜花宴) and crossing-the-bridge rice noodles (过桥米线). The food was delicious, though slightly spicy for our Cantonese friend's palate—still, the portions were generous and incredibly affordable.
Foreigner tip: Yunnan cuisine uses a lot of chili. If you can't handle spice, specify "不要辣" (bù yào là = no spicy) when ordering.
Day 2: Wetland Adventures & Outdoor Thrills
Morning: Gujian Wetland Park (古滇精品湿地): This 1,100-acre wetland park right on the shores of Dianchi Lake (滇池) offers a completely different side of Yunnan. We rented a hand-rowed boat (手划船) and drifted through reed marshes, spotting local birds and enjoying the serene water scenery. The park combines wetland ecology with ancient Dian fishing culture—think "four walls of fragrant rice, sunny beaches, summer lotuses, and spring willows."
Dianren Competitive Rowing Square (滇人竞渡广场): The landmark sculpture depicts ancient Dian people racing boats on the lake, inspired by bronze drum patterns. The 6,385 sqm plaza can hold 5,000 spectators.
Afternoon: Baqianji Camping Base (八千集露营地): The 50,000 sqm outdoor sports camp offers everything from rock climbing and rope courses to BMX biking and kayaking. We tried rock climbing first—great fun with professional instructors. The camp is fully equipped with restrooms, showers, and RV camping spots.
Pro hack: All white tents here make for perfect Instagram photos. Bring a picnic blanket and you can easily spend an afternoon getting that aesthetic camping content.
Real CS Combat: We finished the day with laser tag-style combat in a field full of purple miscanthus grass. The "bullets" are made of water-absorbing gel beads—completely safe and fun for groups. Perfect for team building!
Evening: Group BBQ: The camp has a dedicated烧烤区 with all facilities. We had a whole roasted lamb (烤全羊)—air-freighted fresh—and smoke-free grilling setup. Some of us grilled while others ate... teamwork!
Star Passenger Astronomy Museum (星旅客天文科学馆): This 277 sqm science museum offers hands-on星空观测 (star viewing) activities. We saw the "five poisons" of Yunnan (scorpions, snakes, centipedes, lizards, and spiders), touched a real lizard, and learned about solar prominences. Great rainy-day backup plan!
Day 3: Theme Park Madness
Colorful Yunnan Happy World (七彩云南欢乐世界): The resort's flagship theme park delivers non-stop entertainment. We started with the Ferris wheel offering panoramic views, then caught several must-see shows:

The Summer Carnival Parade (盛夏狂欢大巡游) was absolutely spectacular. As evening fell, we joined the Summer Beer Festival (盛夏啤酒嘉年华) with bonfire party (篝火狂欢趴), watched the drone show, and capped off with a fireworks display over the lake (幻彩滇池烟花秀). An action-packed day!
Day 4: Animal Encounters & Hot Springs
Morning: Dora Animal Kingdom (朵拉萌宠乐园): This petting zoo is perfect for animal lovers. We visited the camel farm (驼牧场), watched the sheep herding show (赶羊秀场), slid down rainbow slides (彩虹滑梯), and explored小镇画廊 (town gallery). The interactive format lets you get close to animals—kids absolutely loved it.
Afternoon: Gujian Hot Spring (古滇温泉山庄): After the animals, we headed to the hot springs. The resort offers various forest pools (山林泡池), including the stunning 无边际温泉 (infinity hot spring) at Qiongtai Bath (琼台浴池). We also tried flower arrangement (花道) and tea ceremony (茶艺) classes at the 璞玉康养花园 wellness garden.
Farewell Dinner at Muyun Restaurant (牧云台餐厅): Our final meal overlooking the mountains—perfect end to an incredible 4-day escape from Kunming's summer heat.
Final Thoughts
The Ancient Dian Kingdom Resort (古滇名城度假区) genuinely has something for everyone: thrill rides for adventure seekers, wet lands for nature lovers, hot springs for relaxation, and animals for families. At ~300 RMB per person per day for accommodation plus activities, it's excellent value for a Yunnan getaway. The proximity to Kunming Airport (30km) makes it ideal for first-time visitors to Yunnan Province.
Best time to visit: April-June for pleasant weather; avoid Chinese national holidays when crowds peak.
Senior alert: The theme park involves lots of walking—wear comfortable shoes. The hot spring infinity pool has good accessibility features.
