Shanghai's Piano Key Spring Garden

One of Shanghai's hidden urban oases, Piano Key Spring Garden (琴键春园) sits along the Huangpu Riverside Walk in the former Expo 2010 area, near the old Shipbuilding Museum and across from the iconic China Pavilion and Mercedes-Benz Art Center. The garden spans approximately 8,500 square meters, home to over 250 cherry blossom trees and 4,000 square meters of tulips.

The name comes from the unique layout—viewed from above, the flowering beds form distinct colored blocks resembling piano keys, alternating with walking paths. It's no wonder this spot has become one of Shanghai's most Instagram-worthy locations.

Walking along the riverside path, you get stunning views of the Huangpu River on one side and this explosion of spring colors on the other. The combination of the river breeze and floral scents creates an unforgettable atmosphere.

The garden is located at Miaojiang Road 777, right across from the Huangpu River waterfront. The colorful flower arrangements create a visual symphony—it's like Mother Nature decided to paint with every color in her palette.

Late March marks the peak blooming period when the cherry blossoms and tulips put on their most spectacular show. Thousands of tulips in full bloom create a stunning contrast with the rows of cherry blossoms overhead—tulips exude gentle elegance while cherry petals fall like snow in the wind.

Entering the garden, you're immediately surrounded by a sea of tulips at your feet while cherry blossom clouds form a canopy overhead—it's easy to lose yourself in this floral paradise and feel completely intoxicated by the beauty.

The tulips here are imported from the Netherlands and come in a dazzling array of colors—yellow, white, pink, red, and more. Each row features a single color variety, planted in neat rows resembling piano keys.

Between the tulip beds, you'll find rows of Japanese Yoshino cherry trees. Their pink blossoms sway gently in the breeze, and when the wind picks up, countless petals float down like snow, landing on the flowers, grass, and pathways below.

The planting method here is truly unique—each row features a single color of tulips paired with white Yoshino cherry blossoms, creating a visual effect just like piano keys. It's absolutely breathtaking.

Currently in full bloom, the garden features over 250 pure white Yoshino cherry trees lining the riverside, creating a romantic scene where cherry blossoms appear to be planted directly on the piano keys.

In this warm spring weather, looking out across the garden, you see a riot of colors—cherry blossoms forming clouds above and tulips carpeting the ground below. It's Shanghai's most beautiful spring scenery.

The blooming flowers form distinct colored strips separated by walking paths, resembling piano keys from above.

Tulips in yellow, white, purple, red, orange, and pink are all in full bloom, while the pink and white cherry blossoms above create a beautiful contrast with the colorful tulips below.

Each year, during tulip season, cherry blossoms follow closely behind, blooming in succession.

The layered blooms dance in the wind like swirling snowflakes, creating a scene of falling petals and filling the air with fragrance.

This beautiful spring scenery has attracted many visitors to come and take photos.

The delicate pink and white blossoms bloom in profusion like snow, and when the wind blows gently, the petals drift slowly down.

The romantic spring atmosphere is absolutely overwhelming.

Amidst the spring flowers, people leisurely stroll along the paths, enjoying the blossoms.

Floating under the cherry blossom clouds, it's easy to lose track of time and forget to leave.

Bonus: Nanpu Bridge Bus Terminal - Shanghai's Most Beautiful Bus Station

After exploring Piano Key Garden, we cycled along Miaojiang Road to the Nanpu Bridge Bus Terminal (南浦大桥浦西公交枢纽站), known as "Shanghai's Most Beautiful Bus Station." From mid-March to early April, the cherry blossoms here are in full bloom.

The Yoshino cherry trees (染井吉野樱) here are in full bloom, creating a scene rivaling Japan itself.

Though there aren't many trees, they bloom magnificently—comparable to Japan's famous cherry blossom spots. The cherry blossoms at this "most beautiful station" are truly stunning.

Many photography enthusiasts bring their "long guns and short cannons" (fancy camera equipment) to capture these stunning cherry blossom scenes.

Photography Tips

There are two must-see spots at the bus terminal:

Spot 1: The passage for Route 65, where several cherry blossom trees form a row right next to the buses. There's a small staircase leading to 2-3 floors above, offering more layered and dramatic cherry blossom views.

Spot 2: Near the intersection at Route 89's stop, there are three cherry blossom trees—not very tall, but their branches刚好 reach the bus tops. From behind the bus, you can capture the cherry blossoms in the foreground with the Nanpu Bridge in the background.
