Trip Overview
When: July 2021 (summer escape from Beijing heat)
Duration: 2 days
Travelers: Friends group
Budget: ~2,000 RMB (~$280 USD) per person
Transportation: Self-driving from Beijing (~4 hours via National Highway 111)
Essential Foreigner Info
Getting There: Drive from Beijing to Fengning (丰宁), Chengde, Hebei Province. Take National Highway 111 for about 4 hours. The route is well-maintained but mountain roads require careful driving.
Why Horse Town? Summer temperatures average just 17°C (63°F) - a dramatic escape from Beijing's sweltering 35°C+ heat. The grasslands offer a completely different landscape from Beijing's urban jungle.
Cold Reality Check: Temperature drops significantly at night. Even in summer, bring a light jacket - morning and evening can get chilly at these草原 altitudes.
Language: Most staff speak Mandarin; English is limited. Have your hotel name written in Chinese (梦马酒店) for navigation.
Day 1: Three Kingdoms District & Royal Stables
Welcome to China Horse Town (中国马镇), a massive equestrian theme park in the grasslands of Northern China! The moment you arrive, the temperature drops and the air gets that refreshing grassland freshness - goodbye, Beijing smog.
The Three Kingdoms (三国街区) district immediately transports you back centuries. We rented traditional Hanfu (汉服) costumes and wandered through the ancient-style streets - suddenly we were characters in a period drama!
Street vendors in period costumes hawk their wares, call out in ancient styles - it's genuinely immersive. We almost believed we'd time-traveled until we checked our phones.
Must-See: Battle of Zhao Zilong (战神赵子龙) - This live action horseback combat show is absolutely mind-blowing. Galloping horses, martial arts choreography, dramatic story of the legendary warrior Zhao Zilong. The scale is massive, the stunts are real, and the audience goes wild. Arrive 30 minutes early for good seats!
Day 2: Animal Interactions & Grassland Adventures
亲子互动区 (Family Interaction Zone) - This was the highlight! We got up close and personal with adorable animals: dwarf horses, camels, ducks, alpacas, and sheep. Feeding them carrots was therapeutic - especially for city folks missing nature.
Royal Stables (皇家马厩) - Warning: your wallet might cry. These aren't just any horses - we're talking world champion breeds. Arabian horses, the legendary 'Akhal-Teke' from Turkmenistan (the famous 'blood-sweating' horses), Dutch Warmbloods used in Olympic showjumping. Each one costs more than a luxury car!
Pro Hack: Don't touch the horses or use flash photography - safety first!
Heroes Square & Entertainment
英雄广场 (Heroes Square) transforms from daytime flower parades to nighttime electronic music parties. The energy is incredible - locals let loose under the grassland stars. Pro tip: visit on weekends or holidays for the fireworks show! We unfortunately missed it visiting on a weekday.
Horse Street & Grassland部落
马街 (Horse Street) has the adorable '萌马餐厅' (Cute Horse Restaurant) and plenty of Instagram-worthy photo spots. The 6号剧场 (Theater 6) small stage shows are worth catching.
Grassland部落 (Grassland Tribe) delivers thrills with grass sliding (滑草) - zooming down the slope with the wind in your face and grassland views stretching to infinity. All your stress literally slides away!
Must-See Show: 草原丝路 (Silk Road on the Grassland) at Theater 9 - this circus spectacle features performers jumping rope and doing acrobatics on running horses' backs. Absolutely jaw-dropping.
Fun Zone for All Ages
天马行空游乐区 (Sky Horse Playground) has something for everyone: carousels and pirate ships for kids, go-kart racing for adults seeking speed!
Accommodation: Dream Horse Hotel (梦马酒店)
This quasi-five-star hotel impressed us. Clean, stylish, and here's the crazy part: no air conditioning needed! Remember, it's 17°C here even in summer - the grassland climate is nature's AC.
Winter Surprise: The hotel has floor heating - perfect if you visit in cooler months. Amenities include gym, conference rooms, and kids' play area. The concierge service is exceptional - they even provide shuttle buses to the theme park.
Food: The Legendary Whole Roasted Lamb
DO NOT miss the '天下第一烤全羊' (World's Best Whole Roasted Lamb) at the Food Street. The crispy skin, tender meat, charcoal flavor - we're still dreaming about it. Perfect for groups - one lamb serves six with 'six ways to eat' (一羊六吃).
Souvenir Recommendation: The grassland Horse Pancakes (马力饼) are addictive - we only bought a few boxes to share, then regretted it when we couldn't find them online later. Pro tip: Buy extra boxes!
Don't leave without trying the horse-themed cultural ice cream - perfect for social media! Available at the theme park, hotel, and food street.
Final Verdict
China Horse Town delivers an unforgettable summer escape. Whether you're with friends, family, orcouples, there's magic here - the cool climate, the horses, the shows, the food, the星空. This is what Beijing weekend getaways should be!
P.S. Parents, this is a PERFECT summer destination for kids! The animal interactions and shows will keep them entertained for hours.
