Essential Foreigner Info
Getting There: Zhangjiajie is accessible by flight or train. The Eternal Love scenic area is located in Wulingyuan (武陵源), about 30 minutes from Zhangjiajie city center. Didi (China's Uber) is convenient and affordable.
Language: Mandarin is dominant; few English signs in the park. Download an offline map or translation app beforehand.
Show Tips: Check the daily performance schedule at the visitor center—showtimes vary and sell out during peak season. Arrive 20 minutes early for good seats.
First Impressions: The Grand Entrance
This was my third trip to Zhangjiajie—but my first to the Zhangjiajie Eternal Love (千古情) scenic area. Previous visits were for the national forest park's famous pillar-like quartz sandstone formations, but today I'm here for a completely different experience.
The grand entrance still takes my breath away. Two rows of totem poles lined with mythological creatures flank either side, leading up to the massive Eternal Love goddess statue at the center—her expression impossibly elegant, as if she's been watching over this land for millennia.
The area immediately immerses you in local Xiangxi (湘西) folk culture—the moment you arrive, you can feel the rich ethnic traditions in the air.
The Four Themed Zones
Zhangjiajie Eternal Love scenic area covers 146.9 acres in the Wulingyuan (武陵源) scenic area, right next to the famous Suoxi River (索溪河). It's only a 5-minute drive from core attractions like Baofeng Lake and Huanglong Cave—perfectly positioned for a full-day visit.
The area is divided into four main themed zones: Dayong Ancient Street (大庸古街), Taoyuan Secret Realm (陶源秘境), Lover's Lake (情人海), and Rotten Apple Kids' Paradise (烂苹果亲子乐园).
Dayong Ancient Street: This zone showcases intangible cultural heritage and traditional handicrafts—perfect for getting up close and personal with Xiangxi's rich artisan traditions.
Taoyuan Secret Realm: High-tech attractions like the Zombie House and Chiyou Storm馆 will surprise you with their thrills.
Lover's Lake: Features Lover's Bridge, Lover's Harbor, and Silver Beach—perfect for young couples and friends.
Rotten Apple Kids' Paradise: Jungle adventures, carousels, bouncy castles, bumper cars, and a replica of Along the River During the Qingming Festival movie theater—there's something for the whole family.
Rain or shine, young or old—there's genuinely something for everyone here.
Food and Refreshments
The food options inside the park are impressive. Even a simple bowl of cold rice noodles (凉皮) here is unforgettable—I've been craving it ever since.
The Must-See Show: Zhangjiajie Eternal Love
Pro tip: Grab a show schedule at the visitor center before exploring. The performances are the real highlight here, and they change daily based on the main show's times. Don't miss the theater performance!
The show combines VR, AR, and other cutting-edge technologies to transport audiences through 10,000 years of history—creating a大型歌舞 (large-scale song and dance) performance that complements Zhangjiajie's natural wonders perfectly.
Using dreamlike stage effects, the performance unfolds in three-dimensional space—on water, land, and in the air—telling Zhangjiajie's past and present. It's a cultural feast and spiritual cleansing all at once.
Act Breakdown
The show is divided into six acts, each condensing millions of years of Zhangjiajie's history and legend:
Prologue:沧海桑田 (The Endless Changes of Time)
Zhangjiajie's Wuling源 sits at 30° north latitude. 380 million years ago, intense tectonic movements lifted the plates, and water erosion carved these incredible sandstone pillars from the earth. These 3,000 peaks became cradles of civilization, where humans thrived and created the brilliant Dayong civilization.
Act 1:武陵仙境 (Wuling Fairyland)
"When spring comes, peach blossoms fill the water—we cannot tell where the fairyland lies." Legend says Wuling源 in Zhangjiajie is the original setting for Tao Yuanming's famous essay "Peach Blossom Spring."
The spirit of water, the beauty of flowers, and the charm of people—all come together in this Wuling Fairyland.
Act 2:天子山传说 (Legend of Tianzi Mountain)
"If you have seen the face of the Emperor, you need not see any other mountain in the world." The famous Tianzi Mountain (天子山) is tied to a Tujia ethnic legend. During the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, when tyranny ruled and people suffered, Tujia leader Xiang Dakun led his people in brave resistance against oppression.
Act 3:小城往事 (Memories of a Small Town)
In the small towns of Xiangxi, as described by Shen Congwen, days begin with the company of flowing streams, nights end with fireflies. A river of spring, a boat song, a glance of longing—these are the poetic verses of Western Hunan.
Act 4:马桑树 (The Sang Tree)
Zhangjiajie is red revolutionary soil—the hometown of Marshal He Long (贺龙元帅) and the departure point for the Red Army's Long March. In that era of war, Xiangxi men stood up and went forth bravely, stepping onto the path of revolution. The farewell beneath the sang tree became an unforgettable memory for Xiangxi women.
Finale:爱在湘西 (Love in Western Hunan)
Women of Xiangxi are passionate, heroes emerge here. Beautiful stories gather here, hero ballads are sung here. Dedication and responsibility, great love and sacrifice—these qualities have influenced generations of Zhangjiajie people. This is a land of beauty, love, and wonder. This is Zhangjiajie.
Reality check: The show uses state-of-the-art light and sound technology, with effects that send you flying, surprise you, and keep you on the edge of your seat. You'll be fully immersed—almost overwhelmed—by the experience.
Watching this show, you're immersed in Zhangjiajie's nature—the bizarre peaks, the colorful underwater world, the dreamy Wuling Fairyland, and the spectacular moment when a thousand tons of floodwater burst onto the stage. Absolutely mind-blowing!
There are many places with karst, Yadan, lava, and Danxia landforms around the world. But there is only one Zhangjiajie landform—and it's right here in Zhangjiajie. Taking this incredible landscape to the stage, singing the legends of Xiangxi that span time and space through three-dimensional mystery, bringing ancient and mysterious Xiangxi culture to everyone—finding the peach blossom spring in your heart...
This is the Zhangjiajie Eternal Love (张家界千古情) show. Absolutely beautiful.
I could use a dozen more Zhangjiajie Eternal Love experiences!
