Trip Overview

When: June (best weather for beach activities)
Duration: 4 days
Travelers: Family with kids
Budget: ~2,000 RMB (~$280 USD)
Destination: Sanya (三亚), Hainan Province, China

Why Sanya?

I've been to Sanya more times than I can count, but this trip was different—I was determined to find the hidden gems that most tourists miss. Instead of the usual tourist traps, we discovered unique accommodations, incredible marine experiences, and restaurants that will blow your mind. Let this guide show you how to experience Sanya like a local, not a tourist.

Where We Stayed

Accommodation Option 1: Designer Homestay in Yalong Bay (亚龙湾)

Located in Bohou Village (博后村), this area has become a hotspot for converted homestays. We chose a place under 200 RMB per person—total steal for a designer property. The entire internet seems to have discovered this place; every 'influencer' in China has posted here. It's not hard to see why the film crews keep choosing this location—it's ridiculously photogenic.

The poolside room opens directly to the swimming pool, making it incredibly convenient for families with kids. I could finally watch my little one swim without running outside. The glass-walled poolside area makes for stunning photos. Rooms are spacious, beds are comfortable, and the modern smart-home features make this perfect for young travelers.

Pro tip: Book early—this place books out months in advance, especially weekends.

Accommodation Option 2: Beluga Sanya Ocean Exploration World Hotel (大白鲸三亚海洋探索世界酒店)

Another excellent choice with outstanding value at around 200 RMB per person. This is THE family hotel—combining an oceanarium, dining, and entertainment in one place. We experienced 'firsts' here: feeding little penguins, interacting with flower whales, and getting up close with countless marine creatures.

During the pandemic period, only one restaurant was open, but the food was exceptional—iron plate cooking and Japanese cuisine were both delicious. The chefs even asked about our preferences. The semi-indoor swimming pool and snorkeling pool mean you can enjoy water activities without getting sunburned. You could easily spend an entire holiday without leaving the hotel.

Hotel Location & Transport

The homestay is in Yalong Bay, very close to the beach—just a 5-minute drive to the Outlet (一号小镇奥莱) for shopping and dining. The famous Yalong Bay Road is lined with lush green trees that are absolutely stunning. Walking to the beach takes about 10 minutes from the Beluga hotel.

The Yazhou District area is a bit farther from the city center, but the hotel's facilities are so comprehensive you won't want to leave. Taxis to the famous Tianya Haijiao (Heaven and Earth Sea) scenic area take about 15 minutes.

Unique Experiences You Can't Miss

Feeding Penguins & Flower Whales at Beluga Ocean World

The highlight of our trip—feeding penguins and swimming with flower whales. Book in advance and follow the staff's safety instructions. There's also a snorkeling pool where you can see manta rays and schools of tropical fish. Want to stay dry? Rent a transparent glass boat and row to the center for an unobstructed view of the underwater world.

Daily Bubble Battles

The hotel hosts bubble battle activities every afternoon—kids absolutely love this!

Yalong Bay Beach & Watersports

The famous Yacht Harbor (海天盛筵游艇码头) offers yacht charters for出海. Beyond just taking photos, try fishing, snorkeling, or various water sports. For groups of 6-8 people, I recommend charters over 1,000 RMB—the spacious seating makes for comfortable cruising and Instagram-worthy shots.

Day Trips: Tianya Haijiao (大小洞天)

Near the Beluga hotel, this area has become a famous photo hotspot. The annual photography art season attracts many locals taking wedding photos—you'll feel like you're in a foreign country with all the stunning backdrops.

Where We Ate

Lin Jie Fragrant Seafood (林姐香味海鲜)

Located in the Outlet Seafood Square, this is the best seafood processing restaurant in Yalong Bay. The square houses many restaurants and shops—we drove from Jiuyue in under 10 minutes. Free parking with plenty of spaces. The environment is great, and the clean商场 restrooms are a plus.

The restaurant is decorated with twinkling lights, creating a dreamy atmosphere. The space can accommodate about 100 guests. The seafood market has all kinds of exotic fish—my kids were fascinated seeing so many different varieties.

Taste Test: After browsing, we chose Lin Jie—we weren't disappointed. We ordered two types of fish, and both were delicious. The grouper vanished within minutes, picked clean to the bone. The red-cooked pomfret was fresh and not fishy at all. The sea snails were perfectly clean, no grit. We also tried Hainan's unique winged bean (四角豆)—the coconut rice was sweet and soft, perfect for kids. Some dishes were prepared with garlic, others with chili to accommodate our family's preferences. The crab and lobster were slightly spicy, but younger diners will love them.

Service: Attentive staff anticipate needs without being asked. They cleared trash multiple times during our meal. Years of experience show—this is a well-oiled operation.

Recommendation 2: Dayangyang Ocean Restaurant (大悦洋海洋餐厅)

From the moment we stepped into the observation elevator, we were blown away by the view. The restaurant's seafront location offers breathtaking bay views, especially at night.

Seafood is the specialty—impossibly fresh with crabs still kicking their legs. I even tried starfish for the first time. Choose from three broth bases: chicken with fish maw, coconut chicken, or fermented rice wine (slightly spicy). Each comes in individual pots, so large groups can try all three varieties.

Unlimited abalone and various seafood, a fridge full of different drinks, and a bar offering cocktails, mocktails, and fresh juices. Slow down and enjoy the scenery while savoring delicious food.

Foreigner tip: Sea-view tables overlooking Dadong Bay must be reserved early—these are extremely popular!

Recommendation 3: Slightly Show (稍微秀)

A creative cuisine restaurant in Sanya Bay worth seeking out. Dishes like Surfing Snowflake Wagyu, Creative Lychee Shrimp Balls, Crispy Coral Corn, and Avocado Wasabi Shrimp—the names alone spark imagination, and the presentation amazed everyone at our table from kids to grandparents.

Chinese cuisine with Western-influenced decor and ambiance—fits various needs perfectly. Great choice for business dinners or family gatherings.

Final Thoughts

Sanya isn't just another beach destination—it's a place where unique accommodations, incredible marine experiences, and unforgettable dining come together. Whether you're traveling with kids, as a couple, or with friends, Sanya has something to surprise every traveler. Skip the typical tourist itinerary and discover the Sanya that locals know and love.
