Attraction Detail

Overview

Nestled in the southeastern part of the Zhoushan Archipelago, Taohua Island (Peach Blossom Island) is a captivating destination that blends natural beauty with literary and cinematic fame. Though the island no longer boasts extensive peach blossoms—most floral displays today are seasonal or artificial—the name endures as a tribute to its romanticized past. Just a short boat ride from the renowned Putuo Mountain and Zhujiajian Island, Taohua Island has earned its place as one of Zhoushan’s top attractions, ranking No. 6 on local must-visit lists.

Literary and Cinematic Legacy

Taohua Island gained international recognition through the works of famed Chinese novelist Jin Yong (Louis Cha). In his classic wuxia epic "The Legend of the Condor Heroes," the island serves as the secluded home of Huang Yaoshi, the enigmatic “Eastern Heretic.” This fictional connection has been brought to life through real-world tourism development. The island hosted filming for multiple adaptations of Jin Yong’s novels, including both "The Legend of the Condor Heroes" and "Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils," cementing its status as a pilgrimage site for martial arts fiction fans. Visitors can explore meticulously recreated Song Dynasty-style architecture at the Shediao Hero Town film set, complete with pavilions, courtyards, and themed streets like Lin’an Street.

Key Scenic Zones

Taohua Island is divided into six main scenic areas: Taohua Valley, Tawan Golden Sand Beach, Anqi Peak, Dafu Rock, Taohua Port, and Xuanbogu Islet. Of these, the first four are open to individual travelers and form the core of most itineraries.

Dafu Rock is home to the Shediao Hero Town—a full-scale film studio and theme park where visitors can wander through Huang Yaoshi’s Villa, Guiyun Manor, and the Temple of the Southern Emperor. Climbing to the summit of Dafu Rock rewards hikers with panoramic views of the Zhoushan islands scattered across the East China Sea.

Adjacent to it, Anqi Peak stands as the highest point in Zhoushan. The trail to its summit passes dramatic rock formations and leads to Shengyan Temple, offering both spiritual respite and sweeping vistas. Nearby, Taohua Valley showcases pristine natural landscapes, highlighted by the “Pearl of the East China Sea”—an 80-centimeter-diameter spherical stone nestled among cliffs. Other notable rock formations include Danzhi Peak, the Eagle-and-Carving Stone, Turtle Patrol Shore, and the Humble Guanyin Statue.

For relaxation, Tawan Golden Sand Beach features soft sands and crystal-clear waters. At dawn during summer and autumn, the “Golden Sand Sunrise” creates a breathtaking spectacle where sea, sky, and sand merge in golden light—making it a favorite among photographers and early risers.

Practical Travel Notes

Taohua Island has two main entry points: Shao Car Ferry Terminal and Taohua Island Passenger Station (also known as Thatched Hut Pier). Most independent travelers arrive via the latter. Note that Xuanbogu Islet is restricted to organized tour groups, while Taohua Port sees few visitors due to limited transport access.

Accommodation is primarily offered through locally run guesthouses and farmstays (“nongjiale”), many of which serve freshly caught seafood prepared to order—a delicious and affordable dining option. Evening activities include beachside bonfire gatherings and drinks at the island’s lone seaside bar, illuminated by string lights against the night sea.

Seasonal Considerations

While the island is accessible year-round, the optimal visiting window is June through October, when temperatures are pleasant and skies are generally clear. However, this period also coincides with peak domestic holidays (especially National Day in early October), leading to crowded ferries and shuttle buses. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid major Chinese public holidays. Additionally, the typhoon season (July–September) can disrupt ferry services and outdoor activities; checking weather forecasts before departure is essential.

Visitor Experience

Despite its fame, Taohua Island retains a tranquil, off-the-beaten-path charm compared to more commercialized destinations in Zhejiang. A full-day visit comfortably covers the four main paid zones, though staying overnight allows for a more immersive experience—particularly for those seeking sunrise photography or quiet evening strolls along the shore. With its mix of myth, mountain trails, cinematic sets, and seaside serenity, Taohua Island offers a uniquely layered journey through China’s cultural imagination and coastal splendor.
